JB Wood Continuing Care Centre

Big Lakes is home to two major health centres; one family care clinic; two addiction and mental services centres; two continuing care centres, and eight community/public health service centres.

Alberta Health Services lists the following health care facilities and services available throughout BLC:

Hospitals or Health Centre:
These are AHS and AHS partner facilities for treating urgent, complex or other health needs on an inpatient basis. Some sites may provide hospital care, continuing care or community health care. Located in High Prairie and Swan Hills.
Community and Public Health Services:
These facilities provide a wide range of health services which may include prenatal, postpartum, health promotion/disease and injury prevention, bereavement services, communicable disease and school health, and many other community care, public health and wellness programs. Located in Gift Lake Metis Settlement, East Prairie Metis Settlement, Grouard, High Prairie, Kinuso, Peavine Metis Settlement and Swan Hills.
Family Care Clinics:
Family Care Clinics bring together an inter-professional team in one location to provide primary care, chronic disease management, and multidisciplinary support over extended hours of service 7 days a week. Located in Swan Hills.
Addiction and Mental Health Services:
These facilities and programs are for the treatment and care of people with mental health or addiction challenges. Located in High Prairie and Swan Hills.
Continuing Care:
These are AHS or AHS partner sites offering long term and/or supportive living options in this community. Located in High Prairie and Swan Hills.
The High Prairie Health Complex:
The High Prairie Health Complex is a state-of-the-art health facility located in the town of High Prairie that brings the majority of health services for the town and surrounding area under one roof. The facility opened its doors to the public in April 2017 after eight years of work and a construction budget of $228-million.

The facility includes:

  • an emergency department;
  • an acute care clinical building;
  • a continuing care centre;
  • a community health and wellness clinic;

With 67 continuing care beds, the new facility nearly doubles the number of continuing care spaces in the community and creates approximately 16 new fulltime health care positions. The new centre also includes space to develop a labour and delivery unit, surgical services, and a dialysis unit.

Services: Outpatient, Indigenous Health, Addiction and Mental Health, Home Care, Diagnostic Imaging, Laboratory, and Inpatient Pharmacy Services. A full range of public health services are also available through the Community Health and Wellness Clinic, including chronic disease management, early childhood development, and health promotion.
