Big Lakes County Visits Dubai

Written by Big Lakes County

From February 17-21, 2019, three producers from Big Lakes County attended Gulfood in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Gulfood is the largest annual food trade show in the world. The Big Lakes County Economic Development Authority led the mission with support from the Canada-UAE Business Council and Alberta Agriculture and Forestry.

The Government of Alberta has prioritized the United Arab Emirates and the Gulf Cooperation Council states to diversify trade and investment. It selected the Canada-UAE Business Council (CUBC) to represent its interests in this region.

Big Lakes County has been focused on crop and market diversification for the past two years. The Economic Development Authority and the Agriculture Service Board presented a joint recommendation to Council to send local farmers to Gulfood with the aim to build local capacity and further explore opportunities for crop and market diversification. Council approved the mission in January.

During the visit, the BLC delegation enjoyed high levels of access. The delegates met with Canadian stakeholders and with decision makers in the UAE such as Essa Al Ghurair Investments, DP World, and the UAE Ministry of Cabinet Affairs and the Future (Food Security). The mission was part of a multi-year effort to diversify and increase agriculture exports and investments. This also includes working to improve trade infrastructure throughout Northern Alberta. The group established strategic relationships and gathered information to move forward with an action plan with key partners over the next three years.
