The Big Lakes County Economic Development Authority (EDA) has initiated a unique pilot project to help a dozen local companies improve their online presence. The project, which is the only one of its kind in North America, is the vision of Alberta-based Progress (un)Ltd. and GoDaddy, whose headquarters are in Arizona. Both companies would like to explore how to best help small businesses that are integral to a community’s local economy increase their sales and attract new talent and partnerships by having stronger digital communications and marketing.

Smaller businesses with under 5 employees often don’t have websites. Reasons include: "too small to warrant a website, didn’t think it would help with my business, it’s beyond my technical expertise." Larger companies’ websites could be out-of-date and ill-maintained, which, in effect, leaves an overall poor impression of the business. When websites are missing, and there are many websites that do not reflect online how great a company truly is in person, the overall impression of a municipality suffers, too. Prospective visitors, residents, and investors often search existing businesses to learn more about a community before making decisions.

GoDaddy has an easy-to-use platform that is designed for the non-tech business owner who wants to create and maintain a professional and modern website without the hassle. This pilot project aims to see if the platform have a positive impact on the local businesses that participate, and on Big Lakes County’s overall economic development goals. Big Lakes County has a visionary EDA open to innovation that brings value to local businesses. In 2018, the EDA designed and launched the Big Lakes Business Supports Program to assist businesses with one-on-one advisory services, tailored research, assistance navigating government resources, and workshops.

This website improvement pilot project will run through the Business Supports Program. The team will provide full support in planning and developing participants’ websites. Companies will receive the added bonus of free website hosting courtesy of GoDaddy for one year, as well as 24/7 help from GoDaddy's award-winning sales and support team. Participants will have the option of a traditional website to market services or a website with online store functionality to sell goods online.
