Whether you’ve lived in Big Lakes County (BLC) your whole life or it’s your first time here, you may not realize how embedded community organizations are in each of our hamlets.  Our community organizations really do a ton. They operate campsites, manage recreational and social infrastructure, provide cultural and recreational activities, host farmers markets, support seniors, plan and host community events, maintain public areas and amenities, and even pursue hamlet beautification activities. Their good work has a major impact on our quality of life and even on our economy.

With their broad scopes and far-reaching activities, the important roles these organizations play in our communities sometimes go unrecognized. That is why BLC’s developed Community Driven Services – Maps. The maps showcase these services and make them easier for residents and visitors to access.

These vibrant maps, much like BLC itself, are all about the colourful experience one has in Big Lakes County. That’s why they also highlight amenities such as shops and fuel, natural assets, and fun activities. We made these maps to enhance your experience. For example, if you’re spending a weekend at the Joussard Community Association’s Lakeshore Campground, you should check out the water access, swimming, fishing, shops, parks, walking trails etc. just look to the community map! You’ll have a better, more enjoyable time in our county.

Our community organizations are our boots on the ground, influencing community development and growth neighbour to neighbour. This personal, collaborative approach to community enhancement sets the bar high, and it’s why we’re so excited to be able to share our community driven services – maps with you. So, you can experience for yourself how BLC has been investing in our communities for you.

On March 9th, 2019, Expedition Management Consulting’s visitor-friendly assessment team attended the 26th annual Ice Fishing Live Release Tournament in Joussard. Our team received a warm welcome to the well-run event and we had a fantastic time learning about ice fishing from local experts. We enjoyed clear skies and warm weather during our visit and we were treated to a delicious dinner at the community hall. Although we didn’t catch any fish, we were lucky enough to see a spectacular star display once the sun went down that night. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the region and we are already planning a return trip. Well done Big Lakes County!

More About the Project

Through the Visitor Friendly Assessment and Action Plan project, Big Lakes County’s visitor friendliness is being assessed during both the summer and winter seasons. The key findings from the assessments are then used to develop actionable recommendations to improve visitor friendliness, with the ultimate goal to increase visitation to the region. There is great potential to grow the tourism industry in Big Lakes County and the Visitor Friendly Assessment and Action Plan is an important early step.

The final report is scheduled for completion in the Spring of 2019.
